Mykola Tomenko: Nearly 80% of Kyivans insist not on the New Majority, but on the Resignation of the Newly-Elected Kyiv Authorities
Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, believes that appeals on Kyiv City Council reshuffle and plundering of Kyiv demonstrate absolute non-acceptance of Leonid Chernovetskyi and his team by Kyivans.
M.Tomenko stressed that Kyiv mayor Leonid Chernovetskyi is on top of an absolute anti-rating. According to figures from a recent opinion poll conducted by "Ukrainian Democratic Circle" agency at the request of the Institute of Politics on March 19-25, 2011, 89,9% of Kyivans disapprove of the activity of Kyiv mayor Leonid Chernovetskyi, while only 5,3% approve of it.
However, M.Tomenko believes that the residents of Kyiv reject the evolutionary variant as suggested by the authorities and Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov (i.e. to set up a constructive majority in Kyiv City Council). The Deputy Chairman admitted that majority in Kyiv City Council could be set up only from a part of Chernovetskyi Bloc faction, the Party of Regions, the People´s Party and other political forces who had upheld the decisions of ‘Chernovetskyi´s young team´ who had allegedly plundered Kyiv.
"For a good reason do Kyivans criticize the activity of the previous Kyiv authorities and call for drastic measures," stressed M.Tomenko. According to figures from the opinion poll, absolute majority of Kyivans (88,8%) believe that Leonid Chernovetskyi should submit resignation. 4,3% hold the opposite opinion. Moreover, 79,4% of Kyiv residents call for early mayoral elections in Kyiv.
"The authorities should obviously take into account the public moods. However, the following preconditions should be arranged to bring the authorities in line with the standpoint of Kyivans: facilitated scrutiny of criminal cases involving the leaders of Kyiv, and early elections," summed up M.Tomenko.
